The purpose of the Peace and Justice Committee is to encourage and provide opportunities for people at St. Andrew’s By-The-Lake to be aware of and help provide for the needs of those who need our assistance – locally, nationally, and around the world.
We are now very involved in Supporting Duluth’s CHUM (Churches United in Ministry) through food and monetary donations, making monthly Sunday bag lunches for the drop-in center, and making quarterly dinners cooked at St. Andrew’s and delivered and served at the drop-in center. With the Parish Life Committee, we have supported this work through a “Share the Love” Valentine’s concert for the past three years.
We have also supported CHUM with a garden project, the Women’s Shelter in Duluth with Christmas gifts for the children, Life House kits for street teens in Duluth, Nets for Life (an African anti-malarial campaign), and Duluth Community Gardens ( through a donation to help fund the Hmong gardeners). A 5K Bridge for Peace Run was organized and undertaken to support the Central Asia Institute, and over the course of three years raised $20,000 to help build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Our Green Team has been recognized by the diocese of Minnesota for its environmental work.
Other important historical projects have included the support of a Somali family as they relocated to Duluth, and the funding for and construction of a Habitat for Humanity house in Duluth.
This kind of outreach work bubbles up and is not limited to the Peace and Justice committee. Our church members are involved in GLBT justice work, gun violence cessation, Seafarer’s ministry, Prayer Group prayer shawls, Bayshore nursing home outreach, and Pennies for Peace fundraising.
